Success with student with selective mutism

“Gail, I purchased your wrist-o-pics at the 2011 MSHA conference and just wanted to share a success story. We used it at an elementary school with a kindergarten student who has selective mutism. She began using it within hours of putting it on her wrist! Instead of pointing to the picture, she has chosen to give the individual”pic pocket” with symbol in it to the listener. Her initial use of your tool is similar to that of a “picture exchange” system. Her symbols are: yes, no, bathroom, help and stop. One slight modification our staff made was to move it from her wrist to her belt loop. A great tool

“Wrist-o-pic works great to reinforce desired behavior. Sometimes I use pictures, and sometimes words are used, depending on the student. Many students simply enjoy wearing the “bracelet,” no matter what symbols are placed in the little windows. As long as the same number (and for some, the same symbols) are used at the beginning of every day, they are happy. Removing a symbol when the desired behavior is not achieved, or when undesirable behavior presents itself, is effective if there is a reward at the end of the day (or other determined time period) when the student has all of the symbols remaining on the Wrist-o-pic. Eventually, the reward is not even necessary. Simply having the symbols in place is reward enough. One student realized that when I called his name in a certain tone that he was going to lose one of his symbols. He would cover the Wrist-o-pic with one hand and say, “No, please.” He did not want to lose one of his symbols. He later learned to recognize a “look” from his teacher rather than responding to words. And he later also learned that he did not have to cover his Wrist-o-pic to prevent losing one of his symbols if he complied with “the look.” It takes a couple days to a couple weeks, but Wrist-o-pics work wonders when used consistently every day.”

Wrist-O-Pic

Great product

This program works!

“This program was completely new to me when I signed up for the class and I have to say that I love it! The child that I have been working with is only four years-old and he caught on to the idea very quickly, and it works!! I feel so much relief now that we’re using the wrist-o-pic because I am much more calm when faced with his behavior rather than getting upset and then trying to discipline. The correction of his behavior is now his responsibility rather than me stepping into the situation and “fixing” the behavior for him. Although he can’t put words to his feelings I’ve got to believe that he feels empowered by this as well because he is able to take a step back, assess the situation, and change his behavior all on his own. I have noticed a significant change in a short amount of time. He is using his words more and coming to me for help to get through a situation that he may not have the language to get through on his own just yet. He seems much more confident now than he did just a couple of weeks ago. I love it and I can’t wait to use it in a classroom setting when I go back to teaching!”
