Welcome to the home of the Wrist-O-Pic (patent pending), and creator of Metaphorical Programming, a research-based behavior intervention program for children in elementary and special education. The Wrist-O-Pic also serves as a facilitation tool for those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity, Autism, Early Alzhemers, Communication Disorders, Cognitive Disabilities, Tramatic Brain Injury, Memory Impairments, etc. This company is owned and operated by a special education teacher with over twenty years of experience. Gail Hanevold and her husband, Tom Woodside, proudly support people with disabilities by hiring them to assemble and package the Wrist-O-Pic.
Here’s an excerpt from the Teacher’s Tutorial that briefly introduces Metaphorical Programming. "Using Metaphors to Modify Behavior: A No-Nag Intervention"
Meet Andy, a hyper little kindergartner.
“This sucks!”
He starts throwing papers off of his desk. His teacher glances at him and says, “Smooth sailing.” Andy freezes! He looks down at his work materials, glances towards the sailboat pictures displayed on his wristband, closes his mouth, and proceeds to trace the letters in his name.
This entire exchange occurs in less than a minute. Andy recognizes the predetermined metaphorical cue, “smooth sailing,” and takes note of the visual picture cues on his wristband, known as the Wrist-O-Pic, patent pending. He becomes aware of his behavior and makes the decision to transform his anger into calm. He returns to his work, and the teacher continues with the lesson. Johnson (1992), when referring to “stop-think” training, a Cognitive Behavioral Training technique used to control impulsively, states “Children are taught techniques to stop themselves before acting, to ask: What’s going on here? What am I being asked to do? What’s the Problem? Then they reflect on various courses of action.” In Metaphorical Programming (MP), a visual and verbal metaphorical cueing system provides students with the opportunity to acknowledge their inappropriate actions as well as the option to continue or abandon the behavior. Social rewards are given for meeting the designated criteria.
After quashing 80% of referrals for Emotional Behavioral Disorders (EBD) when using these strategies, educators voice a desire to learn how to replicate this intervention. The Teacher’s Tutorial, "Using Metaphors to Modify Behavior: A No-Nag Intervention," Hanevold, G.F. (2007), gives birth to a whole new approach to behavior modification, or behavior transformation, as it might better be called.
This intervention has been used successfully with behaviorally challenged elementary youth, those with ADHD behaviors, and transition-aged adults with cognitive disabilities. MP assists in teaching students how to become aware of their behaviors so they can make informed decisions. If the “catch ‘em being good” approach isn’t working, give this intervention a try.
The Teacher’s Tutorial, a comprehensive reference card, outlines the eight step process involved in using student interests to create metaphors that motivate and inspire individuals to transform their behavior. This is available as The Teacher's Tool Kit and includes:
A laminated double-sided reference card: "Using Metaphors to Modify Behavior: A No-Nag Intervention."
One Wrist-O-Pic, an adjustable nine inch washable wristband with five detachable clear vinyl picture pockets. Just insert your pictures, communication symbols, or images of your student’s special interests, and you’re ready to go! The Pic-Pockets come connected in sets of five and must be gently separated at each seam. (Pictures are not included.)
